Spirit Of Ernst & Susan Wagner Award
The Spirit of Ernst & Susan Wagner Award was established in 2019 and is presented each year during the Washington State Apple Blossom Festival. This award honors individuals, businesses, non-profits, or service clubs that have made significant contributions to improving our community and making it a better place to live.
By 1905, Wenatchee had established itself as a major apple-growing region. In 1907, Ernst Wagner read about the export of fruit to the Pacific. Refusing to sell his apples at 20 cents per case, he shipped 3,000 cases to Seattle and worked with a shipping agent who helped him send the apples to Australia, where he was paid from the proceeds. His apples were met with great success, selling for $10,000. While on holiday, he visited dealers in Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji, and returned with signed contracts for 27,000 cases. Rumor has it that he shipped 35,000 cases the following year.
Ernst met his second wife, Susan (Sue), in New Zealand, and she moved to Wenatchee. Born in New Zealand, Sue and her four sisters grew up running country hotels, gaining strong business experience. It’s believed that her decision to start the Apple Blossom Festival was not inspired by a festival she had seen in New Zealand but was a way to make women’s contributions to America’s growth visible. The year 1920, when American women gained the right to vote, was the perfect time to launch the Festival. Susan Wagner was a founder of the Washington State Apple Blossom Festival and remained involved for 25 years. Ernst passed away in 1948, and Sue in 1953. Both left a lasting legacy for the people of Wenatchee, home of the Washington State Apple Blossom Festival.

2024 Recipient, Wenatchee Valley Children's Guild
Since 1948, the Wenatchee Valley Children's Guild has been dedicated to improving our community, supporting a wide array of local causes. They have truly embodied the spirit of giving through their volunteer efforts and fundraising initiatives, including their renowned Follies Shows, Christmas Wreath Sales, and various other events. Every cent they raise is reinvested into the community, and to date, they have contributed over one million dollars.
Past donations have supported organizations such as the Alatheia Riding Center, CASA, Windows for the Bruce Hotel, Mobile Meals, The Senior Center, and even the stage curtain for the Numerica Performing Arts Center in 2001. Their current focus is on the health and welfare of Wenatchee’s most valuable resource—our children. They assist families with children by providing support for unexpected or basic needs, strengthening household foundations. Additionally, the Guild helps local schools by supplying essential items like hats, boots, gloves, and warm clothing for students in need. They also provide Christmas portraits and gifts for women and children at Grace House, ring bells for the Salvation Army, stuff backpacks for kids, contribute to toy drives, and so much more.
